چکیده

Metascheduling is a key functionality of the grid middleware in order to achieve a reasonable degree of performance and reliability, given the changing conditions of the computing environment. In this contribution a comparative analysis between two major grid scheduling philosophies is shown: a semi-centralized approach, represented by the EGEE Workload Management System, and a fully distributed approach, represented by the GridW ay Metascheduler. This comparative is both theoretical, through a functionality checklist, and experimental, through the execution of a fusion plasma application on the EGEE infrastructure.

A comparison between two grid scheduling philosophies: EGEE WMS and Grid Way

In order to achieve a reasonable degree of performance and reliability, Metascheduling has been revealed as a key functionality of the grid middleware. The aim of this paper is to provide a comparative analysis between two major grid scheduling philosophies: a semi-centralized approach, represented by the EGEE Workload Management System, and a fully distributed approach, represented by the Grid...

An experimental comparison of Grid5000 clusters and the EGEE grid

In this paper, we present a set of experiments comparing the EGEE production infrastructure and the Grid5000 experimental one. Our goal is to better understand and quantify how these systems behave under load. We first identify specific characteristics of the workload and data management systems of these two infrastructures, underlining some of their limitations and suggesting some improvements...

Evaluating the reliability of computational grids from the end user's point of view

Reliability, in terms of Grid component fault tolerance and minimum quality of service, is an important aspect that has to be addressed to foster Grid technology adoption. Software reliability is critically important in today’s integrated and distributed systems, as is often the weak link in system performance. In general, reliability is difficult to measure, and specially in Grid environments,...

Practical approaches to Grid workload and resource management in the EGEE project

Resource management and scheduling of distributed, data-driven applications in a Grid environment are challenging problems. Although significant results were achieved in the past few years, the development and the proper deployment of generic, reliable, standard components present issues that still need to be completely solved. Interested domains include workload management, resource discovery,...

Ten years of European Grids: What have we learnt?

The European DataGrid project started in 2001, and was followed by the three phases of EGEE and the recent transition to EGI. This paper discusses the history of both middleware development and Grid operations in these projects, and in particular the impact on the development of the LHC Computing Grid. It considers to what extent the initial ambitions have been realised, which aspects have been...
